Building Positive Economic Derivatives 8-Step PBLP

From financial markets to local investments, derivatives play a powerful role in shaping economic growth, stability, and opportunity. But when misused, they can also create volatility and widen inequality instead of strengthening communities.

Our Building Positive Economic Derivatives 8-Step Project-Based Lesson Plan invites students to explore how derivatives—both financial and community-based—can be designed to support reinvestment, balance risk, and create sustainable ripple effects. Using a STEAMS Initiative Approach, students will investigate how economic models function, study case examples of successful community-driven derivatives, and design real-world solutions that operate in the "middle of the bell curve"—avoiding both harmful speculation and minimal impact. Through hands-on projects, students learn how thoughtful financial innovation can spark lasting, positive change.

Rethinking Our Roads 8-Step PBLP

From crosswalks to bike lanes, the design of our streets shapes how we access schools, parks, and local resources. But for many communities, especially those who walk, bike, or use mobility aids, outdated infrastructure can create barriers instead of pathways.

Our Rethinking Our Roads 8-Step Project-Based Lesson Plan invites students to explore how Active Transportation Plans (ATP) aim to make streets safer and more accessible for everyone—especially those using non-motorized ways to get around. Using a STEAMS Initiative Approach, students will investigate traffic data, public feedback, environmental context, and street design to reimagine what walkable, bikeable, and inclusive communities could look like. On Earth Day and beyond, this project empowers students to propose people-first solutions that protect lives and connect communities.

Exploring Space Frontiers 8-Step PBLP

Reaching for the stars has always been a symbol of human curiosity, courage, and progress. From the launch of the first astronaut into orbit to today’s international space missions, human space flight continues to spark innovations that impact life far beyond the edge of our atmosphere. Our Exploring Space Frontiers 8-Step Project-Based Lesson Plan invites students to discover how space exploration drives scientific, social, and cultural advancement here on Earth. Using a STEAMS Initiative Approach, students will examine real-world applications of space innovation—designing solutions, telling stories, and analyzing systems that prove when we explore beyond our planet, we expand what’s possible for humanity as a whole.

Discover STEAMS Initiative

What is STEAMS Initiative?

Education systems are constantly adapting to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the future. The traditional focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has expanded to include the Arts, giving rise to STEAM education. However, our STEAMS Theory, makes a compelling case for adding another crucial element to this mix, which is Social Studies (and/or Social Justice). In the STEAMS framework, the Arts serve as a powerful vessel to express history and other elements of STEAMS.

The purpose of STEAMS Initiative is to explore and advocate for why Social Studies should be integrated into STEAM, creating a holistic approach that nurtures well-rounded, socially conscious, and innovative individuals. Social Studies provides a unique platform for teaching cultural awareness and global citizenship. Expanding STEAM to STEAMS enables students to understand the social and cultural contexts in which scientific, mathematical, and technological advancements are made, leading to a more culturally sensitive and responsible group of learners.

Through STEAMS education, Social Studies can be implemented in an interdisciplinary manner, allowing students to dive deeper into historical significance while connecting it to other disciplines. Additionally, Social Studies can stand alone as its own disciplinary focus, exploring historical contexts in depth. This dual approach supports the inclusion of Social Studies as a crucial component in modern education, fostering a generation of empathetic, informed, and globally aware learners.

Project-Based Lesson Plans

To leverage the full potential of STEAMS education, we have developed Project-Based Lesson Plans that are freely available. These lesson plans are designed to showcase how STEAMS Initiative can be an effective method of teaching, facilitating a hands-on learning experience that encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Through these projects, students engage in real-world problems, applying knowledge from each STEAMS discipline to find innovative solutions. Our Project-Based Lesson Plans can be integrated into STEAMS curriculums through an easy 8-Step PBLP Framework.
